Tactile comic “The land of uncertainty”
Tactile comic strip “The land of uncertainty” with embossed UV varnish.
“The Land of Uncertainty” is a comic book written and digitally illustrated by Turkish artist Hatiye Garip. This comic includes a poem about nature, mysterious unvisited places and the surprising journey along the path of life. All this is told together with a series of illustrated abstract panels in a very impressive color palette of orange, yellow and purple.
We had the pleasure of working with Hatier and making her comics. We made them completely tactile by using embossed UV varnish in different textures, each texture being responsible for a different color. Texture with dots is responsible for orange color, ripples are for yellow, and diagonal lines are for purple. Thus, blind and visually impaired readers can experience the illustrations of the poem through touch and sensation.
Hatier Garip says, “It was a challenging but unique opportunity to make my first comic accessible! I am so excited that the book is ready to welcome its readers both in tactile print and in a package of audio comics. I hope the door will be opened wide by many more people who want to get involved in affordable comics.”
The Quentin Blake Illustration Center named “The Land of Uncertainty” as the book of the month of July because of the beautiful illustrations and the perfectly applied relief varnish of Scodix.
